Day 4 - Chichibu

After getting around in the morning, most of us headed to the Ikebukuro station to take a special train to Chichibu.
Once there, we briefly shopped and ate, and then individuals chose to head out to the flower fields. After a very long walk and enjoying some nature, we came back and caught some temples/shrines.
On the way back to the station, we got some hot drinks out of a cold and hot drink vending machine. I originally got a hot chocolate for Simon and cannot remember if I intended to try the mystery drink next to it or to get another hot chocolate, but I ended up with a mystery drink. Claire put the translation app on it and was reading the description and burst out laughing as she found out that it was hot bean juice with whole chunks of beans in it. I actually did not find it too unpleasant as it reminded me of red bean from mochi, but everyone else who tried it found it fairly revolting, and everyone got a good laugh.
Afterwards, Morgan enjoyed the onsen, and then we all got some food at a local restaurant and 7-Eleven to eat on the train back.

Day of Departure Preparations

Today we are preparing for the trip (we also have been preparing for several days in many ways)! Many of us are packing, and Tella and I are preparing our house for a couple of guests on the night of our return (two on the trip with us will be staying at our place that night since we arrive so late). Hopefully we can get all of the work needed for outsourcing our work for 10 days finished, ourselves and the boys fully packed and ready, and still have some downtime as a family. We will see, but it should be an exciting adventure. (On the slightly negative side we were texted that the flight from San Francisco to Tokyo is delayed, so instead of us leaving at 1:15AM and sleeping on the plane to prepare for the inbound time zone, we are leaving at 5:15AM, which will be a much rougher layover). We will figure that out once we get there, though.

Delays and a late night cross country race

Here we sit around 3:30 in the morning Pacific time at San Francisco International Airport. We anticipated being somewhere over the Pacific at this time, but we are currently recovering from a very long walk to visit a robot and earlier evening sprints. In Kansas, we had experienced some thunderstorms that had also previously rolled through Denver. They caused delays, but we still had to be to the airport at the original time to check bags and to go through security; as we discovered, security does not stick around with delays. It originally appeared that we would not make our connection to San Francisco, which could complicate things since we were meeting Tella's mom there. After further delays, it seemed quite clear that we could not make it. Then, they let us board earlier than angicipated; upon landing, we found out the other flight had been slightly delayed, but only slightly. Second Day

After waking up early for the hour subway ride to Kodaira, we grabbed some food at a nearby breakfast place. Next we enjoyed training at Kodaira and had tea afterwards. Everyone was tired, so we returned to the Airbnb for naps. That evening we trained at Bunbegawara (one of Koyinagi Sensei's schools). After that, we grabbed a quick supper with Koyunagi Sensei's help and crashed!
